His Majesty Mezcal or how a brutal spirit became the top of sophistication

Mixology lives its own life, develops, creates new trends, has its own different directions. A cocktail can be elegant or casual, discreet or bold, trendy or timeless.

For a long time, the most trendy drink has been a cocktail with Mezcal. This spirit with Mexican roots has been known to the world since ancient times, obtained by distilling fermented Agave Juice, “mezcal” is produced only in 9 states: Oaxaca, Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Puebla.

Historically, The Agave was part of important religious rituals and only priests and noble people could have access to this plant.

This distilled drink was originally known as “Mezcal Wine”, but later adopted the name “Mezcal”.
In the 18th century, the production of Mezcal grew in popularity and became a leading industry in some regions. But with the advent of Spanish colonization, the government banned the consumption and production of Mezcal, arguing that it was “a pernicious abuse of public health and royal interests”, but in fact private economic interests were involved: the ban was created to preserve imports from Europe.

Despite all the prohibitions, Mezcal continued to exist in small closed circles, preserving the heritage of its ancestors.

By the end of the 19th century, with the advent of independence, Mezcal returned its popularity and demand. And from that moment, true connoisseurs of spirits have the opportunity to enjoy Mezcal.

Mezcal cannot be confused with anything else. This is a fragrance that simply hypnotizes and breaks into memory for a long time, characteristic notes of flavor are smoky with the manifestation of notes of chili pepper, chocolate, wood and aroma of green agave – raw aroma with hints of citrus and grassy bitterness. Mezcal cocktails are trending and occupy positions on the lists of top bartenders.
