Art exhibitions in Rome, summer 2021

After a long covid-pause, museums and galleries in Rome have finally reopened their halls. Touch the wood. Surreal Generation has prepared a short selection of art exhibitions in Rome for the upcoming summer.

Archaeology Now, a personal exhibition of Damien Hirst, is on at Galleria Borghese. Over 80 objects from two series were inserted between the pieces of the permanent collection throughout the halls of the villa. The first series is the artists’ legendary ”Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable” (2017)– a made-up story about a ship full of objects of art that sank in the ocean 2000 years ago, which was only recently found with all its’ treasures. The second series is Colour Space(2016) paintings, never seen in Italy before.

One of the finest museum spaces in Rome, palazzo Barberini, presents the exhibition Tempo Barocco. The leitmotif of the narrative is the concept of Time investigated in 40 masterpieces of Barocque artists such as Pietro da Cortona, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Nicolas Poussin, Anton Van Dyck, Domenichino, Andrea Sacchi e Guido Reni. Alongside the paintings, visitors can see a collection of watches of the period. The vast show inaugurates 8 new underground halls of the museum.

Andrej Dubravsky submits a new series of large-scale paintings Runner’s High to the roman public at Richter Fine Art gallery. Born in 1987 Dubravsky represents the very young scene of Slovakia, a former socialist country. In his art, he touches on the uncomfortable factors of the modern world and lifestyle, topics of sexual identity, climate change, globalization, public- and authentic- self.

Mucciaccia Contemporary inaugurates a recently renovated space with an exhibition of works of 4 American artists: Nick Atkins, Sydney Chastain-Chapman, Keegan McHargue, and Andy Rementer. Now you see you is a journey through contemporary visual culture made of symbols and narratives of different epochs. In 20 works, artists created a portrait of today’s globalized world, with a hint of well-versed irony and criticism.

Chiamala Roma (Call it Rome), a big retrospective show of Sandro Becchettis’ photographs takes place at Museo di Roma in Trastevere. Sandro Becchetti, a reportage photographer from Rome, was recognized as one of the best Italian portrait photographers, thanks to his collaboration with Il Messagero, which brought him fame. The exhibition “Chiamala Roma” is a kind of Roman diary from the 1960s till 2013 told by images of its neighborhoods, inhabitants, daily life, and turning moments of the history of the Italian capital. One of the exhibition’s sections is devoted to portraits of prominent people in culture/politics/performance, among which are Alfred Hitchcock, Claudia Cardinale, Carmelo Bene, Bernardo Bertolucci, Federico Fellini.
